IHSAA boys basketball draw yields intriguing matchups across Region
Marc Urban took very little time to celebrate Chesterton’s first Duneland Athletic Conference championship this weekend. The fourth-year coach enjoyed knocking off Valparaiso on Friday night to clinch a perfect conference record, but by Sunday, Urban had shifted toward thinking about the postseason.
The Trojans drew Lowell in the first round of the Class 4A Valparaiso Sectional in the pairings that were released by the IHSAA on Sunday afternoon. Chesterton appears to be on a collision course with the host Vikings should both teams make it to the sectional championship.
“There’s some excitement about the draw because of the anticipation of who you’re going to play,” Urban said. “Once the draw is announced, then you’re looking forward to the opportunity of getting to go to work.”
Chesterton knocked off Lowell 64-40 on Dec. 7 and the Trojans are undefeated in six games against teams from their sectional, including Friday’s 54-51 win over Valparaiso. The Vikings will play the winner of Hobart and Portage, while Crown Point awaits the winner of Chesterton and Lowell.
“All I know right now is we’ve got Lowell on Tuesday,” Urban said. “We don’t look beyond that. Lowell has a great player in Chris Mantis, who we know was just offered a scholarship by Valparaiso University this weekend. Coach (Joe) Delgado does a great job with them and it will be a test for us.”

Trojans win first DAC title since 2008
CHESTERTON — Charlie Eaton picked the biggest moment of the game Friday night to hit the biggest shot of his life.
With Valparaiso threatening to put an end to Chesterton’s perfect Duneland Athletic Conference season and spoil its first conference title since 2008, the junior forward buried a wide-open 3-pointer to help lift the Trojans to a 54-51 win over their rivals.
Eaton came into the game averaging less than two points a game and had scored 28 points all season.
“It was my turn to ring the bell,” Eaton said.
With the Trojans (20-2, 7-0) clinging to a 49-47 lead and looking content to run clock with less than two minutes remaining, Eaton found himself wide open with the ball in his hands. He never hesitated and his 3-pointer gave Chesterton a 52-47 lead with 1:45 remaining.
“It was a big shot,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “He stepped up and shot it with confidence. Charlie can hit those shots. He just knows how to win.”
The Trojans still needed to hold off a late charge from Valparaiso. The Vikings (14-8, 5-2) sandwiched two baskets around a Chesterton missed free throw to cut the deficit to 52-51 with 12.9 seconds left. Chesterton star Jake Wadding responded with two free throws to add to his game-high 21 points. Valparaiso’s Cooper Jones missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would’ve sent the game to overtime after the Trojans denied Brandon Mack from getting a shot attempt.
“Even if I would’ve hit that shot and even if we would’ve won, we still have plenty of things to work on and to get better at,” Jones said.
Chesterton’s gym was packed well before tipoff Friday night as student sections from both schools were standing room only midway through the fourth quarter of the junior varsity game. The Trojans used the energy to their advantage in the early stages of the game, but Valparaiso rallied to take a 31-28 advantage into the locker room. The Vikings came out strong in the third quarter and opened up a 37-30 lead and looked to have all the momentum. Chesterton responded with four straight baskets and ripped off a 16-2 run that carried into the fourth quarter.
“I’m really proud of our guys for how they battled (in the third quarter),” Urban said.
Valparaiso sophomore Breece Walls hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 48-47 before Wadding added another free throw and Eaton hit his big 3-pointer.
The win gives Chesterton 20 wins for just the third time in school history. The Trojans won 21 games under Urban in 2017-18 and they had a school-record 24 wins under Evar Edquist in 1954-55 in their fifth season of varsity basketball.
“We haven’t won conference in 12 years,” Wadding said. “Not something we’ve done since (Zack) Novak was here. That was a lot of fun.”

Trojan basketball team clinches share of Duneland Conference title
The Chesterton boys basketball team improved to 6-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play and clinched a share of the league title with a dominating 94-49 victory at Portage on Friday night.
The Trojans built a 30-11 lead after one quarter and led 54-21 at halftime.
Tyler Vanderwoude led the CHS offense with 19 points, while Jake Wadding and Alex Schmidt each added 18 points. Jake Warren also hit double figures with 13 points.
Rounding out the scoring for the Trojans were Sean Elliott (8 points), Travis Grayson (5 points), Luke Lombardini (3 points), Chris Mullen (2 points), Charlie Eaton (2 points), Barrett Church (2 points), Karson Cardenas (2 points) and Landon Johnston (2 points).
Chesterton will return to the court at home on Tuesday to face Hammond High and then will look to clinch an outright DAC title on Friday when they host Valparaiso.

No. 4 Trojans fall at No. 7 Munster
Two of the state’s best matched up Tuesday night and disappoint those in attendance.
The No. 7 Munster Mustangs hung on to beat No. 4 Chesterton 46-45 as the Trojans last ditch effort was knocked away as time expired.
“That was a really good Indiana High School basketball game,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “They had a huge student section and it was a good environment for us to play in moving forward and prepping for the tournament.”
The Mustangs took a 44-39 lead with 2:41 to play before Jake Wadding split a pair of free throws to pull within 44-40.
“Their zone is so good,” Urban said. “They adjust to what you are doing really well. Early on I thought we found some openings and as the game went on, we didn’t cut as hard as we needed to.”
Alex Schmidt hit a corner 3 for the Trojans to pull within 44-43 with 1:09 to play ahead of a missed one-and-one by the Mustangs.
Tyler Vanderwoude got free underneath for a basket with 44 seconds left for a 45-44 Chesterton lead.
Munster’s Luke Balac, who scored a game-high 20 points, knocked down the eventual game-winner from the foul line with 22 seconds left.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” Urban said. “We left some possessions out there. You don’t learn from those things unless you go through it. I’m proud of our effort and we gave ourselves a chance at the end.”
After a Chesterton timeout, Wadding drove to the basket but had the ball knocked away as the final horn sounded. Wadding finished with a team-high 16 points.
“I thought we were able to get the ball to Jake, especially early,” Urban said. “And we got it where we wanted to late.”
The Trojans Achilles heel on the night was the foul line where they were just 12-of-20 and only 6-of-10 in the fourth quarter.
“It was a possession by possession game and we have to clean up a few of them,” Urban said.
Travis Grayson finished with eight points, while Schmidt (6 points), Jake Warren (5 points), Sean Elliott (4 points), Chris Mullen (4 points) and Vanderwoude (2 points) rounded out the scoring.
Chesterton returns to the court on Friday night when they travel to Portage. The JV game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
“I told them before the game, win or lose, we have to be able to turn the page and get ready for Friday,” Urban said. “We have a chance to get at least a share of the DAC title and that’s only been done twice in school history.”

Team Effort Defeats 5th Ranked South Bend Adams
Most people outside of the Trojans Basketball Program would have thought the game was over when Jake Wadding picked up two fouls in the 1st quarter and had to sit the entire 2nd quarter in a game against the 5th ranked Eagles of South Bend Adams in 4A. However, with great defense, clutch shots, and the willingness to win, the Trojans not only handled their business while Wadding watched from the bench but outscored the Eagles from the time Wadding left until he reentered at the beginning of the third quarter. The Trojans defeated the the Eagles by a score of 68-56 this past Saturday to improve their record to 15-1.

‘He does so many things’: Jake Wadding’s 10 assists, part of a near triple-double, pay dividends for teammate Alex Schmidt and Chesterton in a win against Crown Point
Jake Wadding was in an unselfish mood Friday in Chesterton’s 61-41 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Crown Point.
Wadding, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, finished with 12 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Wadding said it was a career-high for assists.
Wadding rarely takes a bad shot or makes the wrong play in any situation.
It was just Wadding being Wadding. He’s Mr. Efficiency.
“I get double-teamed a lot,” he said. “I just found my teammates in the right spots, and they knocked down the shots.”
Senior guard Alex Schmidt could play basketball with Wadding forever. Wadding makes everyone better. Schmidt finished with 11 points for the Trojans (14-1, 3-0), and four of his points were layups off a pass from Wadding. Chesterton made 21 of 26 shots inside the arc against the Bulldogs (7-7, 1-2).
“It’s a blessing to play with him,” Schmidt said. “I love that kid to death. I’ve played with him my whole life.”
The Trojans (14-1,3-0) raced out to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs didn’t get back into the game.
Chesterton has enough options that it’s dangerous to try to double Wadding.
Sophomore guard Travis Grayson led the team in scoring with 13 points, and senior forward Jake Warren had 12.
After Chesterton took a 16-point lead, the Bulldogs went into a zone. That’s when Wadding started to carve them up with his passing.
Chesterton coach Marc Urban said Wadding is invaluable.
“That’s what he’s done all year,” Urban said of Wadding’s near triple-double. “He does so many things on both ends of the floor that go unnoticed.”
The Trojans are playing at a different level in the DAC. They beat LaPorte by 23 in their previous game.
Urban said it’s not as easy as it looks. His team has to be unselfish, play good defense and take good shots.
“That’s what we have to do to win,” he said. “I understand we have good players, but we have to play with each other. If we had to go through one guy, we probably wouldn’t be as good.”
Schmidt said the team is enjoying the season.
“This is so fun,” he said. “We’ve been waiting so long for this day. Every day we practice as hard as we can, and we come into each game like it’s our last game.”
For Crown Point, it’s back to the film room. Junior guard Ty Smith led the Bulldogs with 20 points.
Crown Point coach Clint Swan said it was a case where Chesterton was clearly better.
“They just took it to us,” he said. “Hats off to them.”

Grayson up to the challenge as Chesterton tops LaPorte
CHESTERTON — Travis Grayson had a little extra motivation.
Times No. 1 Chesterton’s sophomore point guard put a lot of the Trojans’ loss to LaPorte last season on his own shoulders.
“(Slicers senior Carson Crass) just outsmarted me. He outplayed me. He was the better point guard last year. I came back with that in the back of my mind and I didn’t like how that felt,” Grayson said. “(Coach Marc Urban) challenged me to do better. I put that on my back.”
Grayson led all scorers with 26 in Chesterton’s 67-44 Duneland Athletic Conference win Friday.
“Crass is a really good point guard. He makes everybody around him better. (Grayson) found some alleys, found some lanes and was able to get down there and finish,” Urban said. “He let it come to him. He wasn’t trying to be overly aggressive with it, just let it come to him. When we allow the game to come to us and we make the right decisions, I think we’re a tough team to defend.”
Grayson made all eight of his free-throw attempts and nabbed four steals.
The Slicers (7-6, 1-1) controlled the game early, leading 18-9 with about a minute left in the first quarter.
“They came out and shot really well and to our guys’ credit. We took that first punch really well and found a way to make our own run,” Urban said.
But then Grayson exploded and the Trojans closed out that frame with a 9-2 run. The sophomore had 19 by the end of the first half.
LaPorte scored only seven points in the second quarter, and Grayson forced several turnovers, leading to fast-break points.
“That’s just my style of play. I like to press up on people. I like to get a lot of steals and run,” Grayson said.
Chesterton (13-1, 2-0) opened the second half with a 10-0 run. The Trojans controlled the boards for portions of the last two quarters.
Jake Wadding scored 10 points — he averages 17 — but pulled down 11 rebounds.
“Between (LaPorte’s Grant) Gresham and (Grant) Ott-Large, they’re a really good offensive rebounding team. So, we knew that our bigs really had to box them out, but our guards had to rebound,” Urban said. “I haven’t seen the stats, but I think we did a good job on the boards which is key.”
Crass led the Slicers with 10 points.

The Trojans never looked back from the opening whistle of Tuesday's game against the Hobart Brickies with a 78-37 victory. Travis Grayson, Jake Warren, and Jake Wadding all had double digits for the Trojans. The Trojans are back in action at home against the LaPorte Slicers . The game will start immediately after the girls varsity game which tips off at 5:30.

Trojans Return from Break with a W
The Trojans began the second half of their season with a road win against Bishop Noll 76-56. The Trojans went 3-1 during the holiday break with wins against S.B. Washington, Crown Point, and Andrean. The only loss the Trojans suffered was against Fort Wayne Blackhawk who is the #1 ranked team in 2A. Against Bishop Noll, the Trojans were led by Jake Wadding and Jake Warren.

The Trojans continue their winning streak with a win over South Bend Washington at Grace College. The Trojans won 59-45. The Trojans will travel to Noblesville to compete in their Holiday Tournament. First game is December 27th.

The Trojans travel to Gary Century 21 and defeat the #1 ranked team in 1A by a score of 50-48. Jake Wadding led all scores and sealed the victory with two free throws with less than five seconds left. The Trojans will travel to Grace College on December 21st to take on South Bend Washington. Game time is 2:00 PM Central Time.

The Trojans traveled to Elkart Memorial and defeated the Chargers by a score of 65-49. Jake Wadding had another double-double for the Trojans with 19 points and 14 rebounds to go along with 6 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal. The Trojans went on the road and defeated the Lowell Red Devils by a score of 64-40. Jake Wadding had another double-double for the Trojans by scoring 18 points and having 10 rebounds. Peller Resigns as Chesterton Coach

When Tom Peller woke up around 2 o’clock Easter morning, it wasn’t a late night snack or a glass of milk that kept him from going back to sleep.
“You have to do it for the right reasons,” he said of the coaching profession. “I’m close to 200 wins. I want to win a sectional, but those aren’t the right reasons.”
On Tuesday, the 14-year Chesterton coach told the school he was resigning. He informed the team Wednesday. (continued)

Chesterton Beats Hobart to Advance

CROWN POINT — Back on Jan. 8, Crown Point couldn't close out Michigan City, falling to the Wolves in its Duneland Athletic Conference opener.
When the Bulldogs saw an eight-point lead whittled to one in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's Class 4A Crown Point Sectional game, it looked like another one, an even bigger one, might slip away.
This time around, C.P. steadied itself, answering the City surge with a decisive 11-point run that secured a 60-52 victory. It will face Chesterton, which routed Hobart 74-47 in the second game, in Friday's semifinals. (continued)

Lewis' Late 3 Helps Chesterton Beat Hammond

CHESTERTON — After missing 11 of 13 free throws Thursday at Portage, Rhyss Lewis spent two to three hours in the gym the next day regaining his shooting form.
It didn't show up at the foul line Tuesday against Hammond as Lewis had only one attempt from the stripe, but it sure did from the arc, where the Chesterton guard hit five 3s, including a 23-footer from the deep right wing in the final second that lifted the Trojans over the Wildcats, 61-58. Chesterton Survives Andrean

MERRILLVILLE — With 31.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Chesterton's Rhyss Lewis went to the free- throw line to shoot the front end of a one-and-one. His Trojans led by two against a fired-up Andrean team.
The ball left his fingers and hit iron and rimmed out. Then, the whistle blew. Andrean's Amari Sherrod was called for a lane violation. Of course, Lewis hit the next two free throws and The Times No. 6 Trojans survived the 59ers 61-56. (continued)

"I had my teammates talk to me while I was shooting, put pressure on me, so I could focus a little better," Lewis said.

CHESTERTON — Whether it was the early 10-point lead, the grind of finals week or the occasional doldrums of a Tuesday night game, Times No. 8 Chesterton hit a flat spot in the second quarter against Hobart, opening the door for the Brickies to pull even at the break.
"In the locker room, coach was talking about lacking intensity," the Trojans' Niles Dilosa said. "The first quarter, we had it, but it went down from there. We talked about coming out strong after the half, picking the speed up and keeping a steady pace."
Jack Mullen hit a 3-pointer to start the third quarter, and the Trojans (7-5) followed with a 12-point run that sparked them past the Brickies 57-48. (continued)

Merrillville Beats Chesterton in DAC Matchup

"We don't have to wait on guys to come around," Pirates coach T.J. Lux said. "We can just plug and play."

Chesterton Takes Early Lead, Bests Noll

HAMMOND — When Roman Penn drove to the basket to score with 4.8 seconds left in the first quarter, it took the zero off the scoreboard for Bishop Noll.
The dreadful start, 1-for-8 shooting in the opening eight minutes and 10 first-half turnovers, left the Times No. 9 Warriors in chase mode Tuesday against No. 7 Chesterton. The Trojans raced to a 20-point second-quarter lead, resisting Noll's rally to go wire to wire for a 69-58 victory. (continued)
